Notice what you reach for when you want to feel sure. Usually it is something that you were handed, like a fact or a teaching or a sentence someone said before you, something you have read and memorized.

Borrowed knowing has a shelf life. The advice changes, the theory gets revised, and the story that you were told does not fit anymore. What is handed to you has to keep getting updated, because it was never yours to begin with. So you are constantly shifting.

There is another kind of true. It is not the kind you defend. It is the kind that just keeps showing up on its own, whether or not you agree with it. It just is the way it is.

It is the kind that keeps showing up on its own, whether or not you agree with it.

Breath is there. You cannot control it or change it. You can do things for a period of time, but you really have no control over it. You wake up without requesting it, without permitting it. It either happens or, in some cases, it does not. You did not learn these. You just noticed them.

So when you want to know what is true, do not reach for what you know, for what you have been told. Sit still long enough for the borrowed things to fall quiet, and then watch what keeps being true anyway.

What is borrowed keeps changing. What is true simply keeps being true.
